Barges are a reliable transport means for all goods that need to be transported safely, without time pressure. On the water there are no traffic jams or Sunday driving bans, and accidents are rare, so barges are especially suitable for the transport of hazardous substances. The terminal in Frankfurt has scheduled connections to the seaports of Rotterdam and Antwerp as well as many other Contargo locations along the Rhine. The transit time between Frankfurt and the western seaports is 96 hours upstream (to Frankfurt) and 55 hours downstream (to Antwerp or Rotterdam). At the quayside efficient handling is provided at present by one transshipment crane – and in future two.

“When loading barges we have to observe some special points. For instance, we need to follow the stowage plan for the vessel, which gives the exact position for each container on board. Reefers, for example, always need to be placed next to the wheelhouse, because the connection to the electricity supply is situated there. The loading and unloading of barges is supervised both by our experienced 'Bodenmann', and by a crewman who knows his boat better than anyone else.”

Bahn

In the Industriepark Höchst an extensive, efficient rail network gives direct access to international rail freight routes. The rail approach to the Industriepark branches off the Frankfurt – Niedernhausen line to the west of Höchst railway station.  The internal rail network in the Industriepark is about 57 kilometres long. At the terminal Contargo Industriepark Frankfurt-Höchst, block trains can be processed on four sidings each 400 metres long. There are also three more sidings each 170 metres long.

“Rail is an excellent transport mode. Many of our customers make use of our rail connections for good reasons: transit speed –safety and security of transport – ecologically acceptable. And the transport costs are low compared to trucking. Particularly for the many customers in the Industriepark, the way from rail wagon to production plant is very short.”

The Rhine-Main Rail Shuttle Rotterdam offers customers in the Rhine-Main region a direct connection (A-B) between Frankfurt and Rotterdam. With two departures per week and attractive transit times, this service is an alternative for time-critical transports. Depending on the terminal concerned in Rotterdam, containers arrive in 24-32 hours. Another plus is that the rail connection offers the same transit time as long distance trucking, but at lower cost.

Services

Contargo Industriepark Frankfurt-Höchst offers its customers a comprehensive range of services for containers. This includes the storage of containers – whether standard containers, reefers or containers carrying hazardous goods. The terminal also has an depot for empty containers and a workshop for container maintenance and repair. Used containers can also be purchased. After inspection, the purchased containers can be delivered to the customer on side loaders. If desired, inlets can be installed and the containers can be weighed. At this location Contargo also handles bulk cargo.

So that the transport can run smoothly, Contargo offers maintenance and repair for standard containers: they are inspected and repaired in consultation with the customer. For instance locking devices on doors are made functional, rusty areas are restored and necessary replacement parts are fitted. If a container is too badly damaged for repair, it is taken out of service for the sea carrier and replaced. In cooperation with Infraserv Höchst, Contargo also offers the repair and cleaning of tank containers, including certificate-compliant cleaning and kosher cleaning.

In Frankfurt Contargo stores full and empty containers on an area of  52,000 square meters. Here approximately 45,000 TEU are handled every year. In the crane area containers are stacked up to three tiers high, and in the empty container depot even five high.

16 connections are available at the terminal for tank containers with liquids that have to be stored at a constant temperature. Additional heating units can be installed if there is a high demand. The equipment provides preheating temperatures in the range of 30-95°C, and with glycol mixture up to 105°C. Even tank containers with hazardous goods in the classes 3, 6 and 8 can be heated if required, provided  this is permissible.

For the Industriepark Contargo also handles bulk goods. Two industrial cranes are available for this purpose, one of them directly on the terminal site. With one crane about 2,000 tons of industrial salt are unloaded every day, and with the other up to 950 tons of hard coal daily, depending on the season.

Contargo Industriepark Frankfurt-Höchst is very experienced in the handling of refrigerated containers. The terminal has 20 plugs for reefer storage. The terminal also performs interior cleaning and short and long Pre-Trip Inspections (PTI) to test the functioning of the refrigerated container before transport.

To make containers suitable for the transport of liquids, free-flowing goods and bulk goods, Contargo installs various inlets on request. For instance, for liquids thermal inlets are installed that protect the goods from heat and cold. Contargo also provides service for imports, for example wine in flexitanks: the inlets are removed and disposed of according to legal requirements.

All types of wood and loading aids that are exported to south-east Asia have to be treated for pests and parasites. However, imports also have a risk of infestation. Contargo Industriepark Frankfurt-Höchst is the only terminal in the Rhine-Main area offering the fumigation of wood. Contargo brings the container to the fumigation site and the treatment is carried out by an authorised pest controller.

Gefahrstoffe

Chemicals logistics pose special challenges for Contargo. For hazardous goods in particular, special safety requirements and legal provisions have to be met. For this reason all Contargo’s employees are trained in the handling of hazardous goods and are familiar with the regulations and the relevant technology. This ensures safe storage of chemicals for the protection of people and the environment. Contargo works hand in hand with Infraserv Höchst. Especially customers in the Industriepark benefit from the direct proximity to their production plant of a trimodal container terminal with a depot for empty containers, and the possibility of storing containers with hazardous goods for a non-restricted period.

“In the storage of hazardous substances we have to observe various regulations. Thus not only do we comply with the legal requirements of the German Technical Regulations for Hazardous Substances (TRGS510), we also follow the guidelines of the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI). In this way, for example, we prevent a situation where the substances from two containers stored together could interact dangerously.”

Verwaltung/Kundenservice

In Industriepark Höchst, Building G315, many employees are busy at computers and telephones with all the administrative tasks of a container terminal: accepting orders, advising customers, preparing orders, processing complaints, billing and much more. Come in and have a look around.

“In our job, my colleagues and myself are very close to the customers. We deal with enquiries, find the appropriate solutions and coordinate with our partners. It is very varied work – whether a container has to be brought by barge from Rotterdam to Frankfurt at short notice, or long term planning is needed for the handling and transport of concrete parts for airport construction. For some time now we have been operating on the “one face to the customer” principle. This has the advantage for our customers that all their answers come from one contact.”

“Apart from IT-supported billing for transport orders, stored containers and container repairs, the main work of our department is customer support in the form of sales and after-sales management, as well as checking complaints, freight and incoming invoices. We are always accessible to the customer to give advice as wished. We also have administrative tasks in connection with the monthly statement, management of accounts payable and receivable, and statistics.”

"Truck processing is a relatively complex task area. We not only plan the dispatch of the vehicles, we also handle our own trucks and perform gate monitoring of incoming and outgoing orders. For our customers we select a suitable truck, the appropriate chassis and the necessary equipment for a smooth transport.”
Goto first page
"Of course we always take account of the customer‘s particularities like height of ramp, or shuttle transactions. This means that we are in continuous dialogue with customers and subcontractors. No two days are alike and we have to stay flexible.”

“By 2020 we plan to extend the terminal by another 8,000 square meters and install an additional crane on the water side. We hope to become even more efficient and flexible as a result, and even more interesting to customers. Just now for instance, we are engaged in discussion with various enterprises about handling a block train from China in the near future.”
Goto first page
“As a part of the planned terminal extension we want to double the storage area for hazardous goods containers, from its present 300 TEU to 600 TEU. We are also planning to add more classes of hazardous goods to our storage portfolio. By doing this we intend to make the terminal even more attractive to our established clients, and acquire more new customers.”
Goto first page
“We will also use the expansion project to change the layout of our barge terminal, to make us more efficient. The enlargement will also enable us to create additional capacities at the rail terminal in order to establish new train products. For instance, at present we are trying out tarpaulin trailer rail transports with the last mile to the customer by truck.”

“As a leading provider of site-related services, we regard it as appropriate to make good connections to the seaports – safe, fast and flexible – available to our customers. In this way the chemical and pharmaceutical enterprises in the Industriepark can concentrate on their core competences, and Contargo Industriepark Frankfurt-Höchst takes over all the services relating to their containers.”
